History of the Adelphi Theatre
The Adelphi Theatre is a 1500-seat theatre in the West End of London.
The Adelphi Theatre was founded in 1806 as the Sans Pareil ("Without Compare"). In 1819 it took on its present name, which came from the name of a block of 24 unified neoclassical terrace houses occupying the land between The Strand and the River Thames which had been built by the Adam brothers (Greek: adelphoi, "brothers"). The present building is the fourth on the site.
The 1998 video of Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical Cats was recorded at the theatre.
Since 1997 the venue has been the setting for the popular musical Chicago. This production will vacate the theatre on 22 April 2006, transferring to the Cambridge, to make way for Michael Grandage's new production of Lloyd Webber's Evita.
The Adelphi Theatre is owned by Really Useful Theatres/Nederlander.
